A family house on a steep plot above the Bosphorus, stepped into the hill so every room gets morning light and the old fig tree stays.
The brief
A couple with three children wanted room to grow, a garden for the fig tree and a view without living in a glass box.
Our approach
We split the house into three stepped volumes that follow the slope. Thick walls face the street; the garden side opens up with deep timber frames that shade the rooms in summer.
The result
Four bedrooms, a studio and a kitchen that opens straight onto the garden. The house uses 40% less energy than the building code allows.
